LIVING BACTERIA: CELLS AS NEW MEDIUM

Dr.Tal Danino (Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Columbia Engineering, at Columbia University – New York).
Thursday, May 2nd, 4pm to 5pm

The emerging field of Synthetic Biology has prompted the exploration of bacteria as a new platform for novel applications in health, the environment, and art.

« In this talk, I will describe our progress working with bacteria as a new medium at conceptual, experimental, and translational levels. Specifically, the talk will begin with a description of a bacterial gene circuit that generates synchronized oscillations, and will then describe the development of programmed bacteria as both diagnostic and therapeutic agents for cancer.  Lastly, I will conclude with a description of recent bio artworks we created that give perspective to the past and present research fields. »

ABOUT TAL DANINO

Tal Danino is an interdisciplinary artist exploring the emerging field of synthetic biology. His work transforms living microorganisms like bacteria and cancer cells into bio artworks using various forms of media.

Originally from Los Angeles, Tal received B.S.degrees in Physics, Math, and Chemistry from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UCSD. He did his postdoctoral research at MIT and is a TED Fellow.

He is currently an Assistant Professor at Columbia University, and he is working in Synthetic Biological Systems Laboratory, Columbia University. More about Tal Danino’s artworks: click here!
