Desert Dust is a built environment of desert debris collected from the abandoned suburb California City. In an amber-like substance, simulated dust storms are swirls in an imagined landscape.

Located on 80,000 acres of Mojave Desert land, real estate developer Nat Mendelsohn purchased the site in the 1950’s with the intention of creating the next great city in California, rivalling Los Angeles in its size. Mendelsohn’s vision never became reality, however, and the resident who now calls California City home live amongst unbuilt roads and empty cul-de-sac that were intended to become a place where California’s middle class could flourish.
